$12 Million A Year In Annual Revenue
Richards Family History
The early beginnings and work ethic of Richards And Sons dates back to the early 1900's with the Father of the Founder, Ernest Richards. Ernest had a small row crop farm in Blount County where he raised corn, cotton and vegetables. JV Richards, the Founder of Richards And Sons worked with Ernest raising crops during the summer and logging in the winter. JV plowed with a pair of mules during the summer and snaked logs out of the woods during the winter. On the other side of the county, Tom Hathcock, the father of Anna Hathcock (future wife of JV Richards) was busy working on his farm raising vegetables for use and sale. Anna had her chores and she worked in the fields as her future husband did. Anna finished her basic education, but JV left school during the sixth grade to work full time
Anna & JV were married in May 1942 and had four children, Nancy, Faye, Buddy and Fred, which continued the family tradition of working in the family farming business. JV was called to serve in World War II where he was first exposed to heavy earth moving equipment. He worked in the Corp of Engineers building roads and bridges to serve the troops. Anna stayed at home with the two oldest children, Nancy and Faye, working the farm. When JV returned from the war, farming was not as lucrative as it was and they decided to move to Jefferson County where he worked for Tennessee Coal & Iron. They still had the farm, which Anna and the children managed and JV would work in his off time away from TCI. JV continued his experience with heavy equipment working in the ore mines pushing ore to the feeders. The farming business led to raising cattle and hay and in 1958 JV saw a need to start a coal business (Richards Coal Yard) to service the local residents with coal for heating their homes. Anna, Nancy andBuddy, the first son, ran this business while JV worked at US Steel. The equipment used at the farm and the coal yard became useful doing small projects for other people around the

area. Richards Construction Company was the name they used doing just about anything that was needed; hauling dirt or topsoil, clearing land, landscaping, digging basements or driveways and etc. JV, Buddy and Fred (the youngest child) did this work all over the area, building a strong foundation of work for a fair price for many clients in the area. Richards & Sons Construction Company was incorporated in 1985 with JV as president, Buddy as Vice President and Fred as Secretary-Treasurer. JV worked in the business full-time while Buddy worked full-time as a police officer and Fred worked as a superintendent with Harbert Construction. Buddy and Fred both worked part-time in the business as their jobs permitted. Nancy and Anna assisted with paperwork, payroll, payables and receivables. The business continued to grow and in 1992, Nelson Hutcheson (husband of Nancy) joined as the first employee strictly for estimating and management. In 1996 Fred left Harbert to assist in managing field operations. In 1998, Buddy retired from police work and started fulltime management of repair and maintenance of all the equipment. Richards & Sons continues to grow in their evolvement into a full service site preparation contractor working for owners and general contractors all over Alabama
